I get to work late this morning and Jack isn’t too pleased with me. I see the way his eyebrows bunch together. He’s twirling a biro between his fingers like a majorette in a marching band. He’s stressed again. Not that Jack isn’t stressed at any point in the day. I can see him thinking what to say to me, if to shout, swear or be plain nasty. I don’t move to help him out. I hang up my coat and pocket my mobile which will exasperate him no end. We all carry our mobiles with us. He’s given up telling us not to.

‘You will have to lose pay or work some of your lunch time. I had to deal with the chambermaids this morning, Joanne is slow, she needs to work faster. You tell her.’ He throws me some keys and walks away muttering under his breath in Spanish. ‘Don’t be late again or I take money off you for sure,’ he adds just for the sake of it. He will anyway.

‘Cabrόn, I say under my breath. He stops. Turns, wondering if he heard right. I smile brightly then walk away in the opposite direction. I know he heard me call him an asshole. He won’t say anything.

I stop at the bottom of the back stairs. There’s a small mirror on the wall. One of those cheap ones with bad glass that makes you look slightly distorted. I look at my reflection. Make-up would do wonders but it’s too much effort. I run a finger along the dark circles beneath my eyes. ‘Who are you?’ I say to the reflection. What does it matter I think as I pull my hair into a ponytail.

Annoyed by his manner, I waltz into the kitchen and straight to the huge walk in fridge, yank open the door and pull out the smoked salmon. Jim the chief gives me a sideward glance but says nothing. Everyone steals what they can from Jack. He’s such a jerk to everyone.

Grabbing some sliced bread, I make smoked salmon sandwiches with cream cheese for Joanne and I. Ram several slices of the delicious fish into my mouth and put what’s left back in the fridge. I fill a cafetiere with coffee. Put the whole lot on a tray and slink up the back stairs to find her. ‘You didn’t see any of that did you.’ I state to the chef whom I pass on my out of the kitchen, he shrugs and carries on de-boning a huge fish whose eyes seem to follow me out of the kitchen.

I join Joanne in one of the bedrooms. ‘Come on let’s have brunch, Jack’s treat.’ I set the tray on the dressing table, pull the two peach coloured velour covered chairs close to the table and plonk myself in one of them.

‘Really? Jack gave us brunch?’ she asks dropping on the chair with a sandwich in her hand and giving it a sniff. ‘God, I’m knackered. He’s so bloody picky. Don’t think I’ve ever had smoked salmon before.
